Chapter IX

Darcy House - London

Darcy and Georgiana had just settled in to break their fast when Billings came through the door.

“Mr. Darcy, this express was just delivered.”

“Thank you, Billings.”

“Should I have the express rider wait, sir?”

“Yes, if you would please, and see that he gets something to eat as well.”

“Very good, sir.” Billings bowed and exited the room.

“Who wrote to you?”

“Probably Bingley. Ah, yes, he has requested your presence as well as Richard’s if he is in Town.”

“Oh, I would love to see Netherfield. Your description of it being a large estate had me wondering as to its appearance.”

“Yes, it is quite lovely. And, Georgiana, he tells me that he intends to have a ball in the near future.”

“May I attend? William, please say I can at least see the festivities even if I cannot dance.”

Darcy laughed at his sister’s enthusiasm and patted her hand. “Yes, you may attend, but you will only dance with Bingley, Richard or me because you are not out yet.”

“I promise. Oh, I’m so excited I cannot wait.” She fairly bounced upon her chair until Mrs. Annesley touched her wrist, reminding her to act as a young lady should. But her companion did it with a smile on her face, so she did not discourage her charge.

Breakfast was a very enjoyable occasion that morning as Darcy’s sister was smiling, laughing, and with a million questions for her brother. And he was more than willing to comply as his heart was joyful at seeing her happy again.

The next morning, Darcy called for the carriage which was then loaded with their trunks and other items they would need at Netherfield. All looked forward to visiting with Bingley and attending his ball.

Netherfield Park

Thankfully, the trip was without incident, and after one stop to change the horses and to refresh themselves, they arrived at Netherfield to be greeted by Bingley and his two sisters.

“Darcy, Miss Darcy, I am delighted that you are here. But was Colonel Fitzwilliam unable to come with you?”

“Richard is detained in London for two more days. Then he will join us. His words were: ‘I am delighted for Bingley’s invitation and look forward to attending his ball. It should be a grand affair.’ He sent his trunk ahead, and he will follow on horseback when his business is finished.”

“Capital, capital! I eagerly await his appearance. I am betting he has some tales to tell about his experiences.”

“He very definitely has tall tales, however, I have found he is very reticent about his experiences on the battlefield. He will not speak of them.”

“As he shouldn’t. There is a horror of war, I am sure, that should never be spoken of.” Bingley hesitated, then clapped his hands. “Well, come in and get settled. Mrs. Nicholls has your rooms ready. Do you wish to rest a while or would you like refreshments in the main parlor?”

“Georgiana?”

“I am not tired, William. ’Tis such a short journey from Town, I have no need to rest but would like to change
